G is a popular letter to begin brand and company names. Six of the names in Interbrand’s 2009 Top Hundred list begin with G and two of them are in the Top Ten: General Electric (no. 4), Google (7), Gillette (13), Goldman Sachs (38), Gucci (41) and Gap (78). That means 6% of the top hundred brands begin with G, which is about double the percentage of ordinary English words that begin with a G. G is more than three times as likely to end a word in a written piece of text, than to start a word, due mainly to the huge number of English words ending in -ing.
G can be pronounced in different ways in English. You can see two of these ways in the company names above — a hard G in Google and Gap and a so-called soft G in General Electric and Gillette. Usually the G is hard before consonants (glad and green) and the vowels a, o and u (gas, golf and gulf) and soft before e, i and y (gentle, giant and gyrate). For words derived from Old English or which have a non-Romance origin the G usually remains hard (get, gift). Words that have entered English from French usually retain the French pronunciation, where G sounds like the sound in the middle of the word ‘measure’: rouge, beige and luge. G often combines with H, in which case it can be pronounced like a hard G (ghost), like an F (rough) or not pronounced at all (night).
G rarely features in the spelling of lists of favorite words when people are asked, except for words which have very positive meanings such as gossamer or golden. People instinctively feel that a hard G is not a particularly attractive sound. Nevertheless, a hard G belongs to the group of consonants known as plosives (the others are B, P, K, D and T) which are strong sounds, and studies have shown that they make more of an impression on listeners when they are the first sound in a word.
Provided your name is a common word, people will have no difficulty knowing how to pronounce it, but if you make up a name that starts with G people might mispronounce it, especially if you flout the pronunciation rules mentioned above. How do you pronounce Gacko, for instance? Most people would say a hard G as in golf, so if you were hoping the name Gacko’s Applejack would be alliterative you would be in for a disappointment when faced with customers’ response.
The initial G in a name can often sound important, as it can signify Global, can remind people of the big industrial countries (G8, for instance), or can make them think of something powerful (G force). On the other hand if you call yourself G Things, people will not be able to get the image of G-strings out of their head. Think what is going to follow the letter G before you use it.
On a sign and seen from a distance G can be confused with C if the straight bar is not clear. The sounds made by these letters are closely related, and that may be the reason for their similarity in appearance. They are articulated in the mouth the same way — the only difference is the movement of the vocal cords; touch your Adam’s apple as you say them and you will feel for yourself. The history of these two letters is closely intertwined, too; G was, and still is, the third letter of the Greek alphabet (alpha, beta, gamma). The Romans reinstated the letter C but it could be pronounced as a hard C or a hard G, which is why the common Roman forename could be written Caius or Gaius.
