The longer you can sit in your stand or blind, the better chance you have of seeing and bagging a deer.
I’ve been hunting Whitetail Deer for 33 years now and most people I know have always gone hunting early in the morning and late afternoon. I think over the years deer eventually get used to this and start to change their patterns. The last 3 years I’ve gotten my buck between 1:00PM and 1:30PM while all the other guys I hunt with are eating lunch.
Sitting in a tree stand or blind for 6 to 8 hours can be very difficult so it’s very important to be as comfortable as possible.
Hunting From a Tree Stand
I use ladder stands for my tree stands. They are very easy to put up, don’t rot and can be moved easily as I see Deer changing patterns.
Find a tree that can give you some cover like a pine tree, big maple with lots of branches or an Oak tree.
Sitting in a tree for 6 to 8 hours will tend to make you a little fidgety at times so the more cover the better.
Next set your stand in a position with the trunk of the tree is slightly facing back like a lounge chair and directly behind you. If the tree is leaning forward or off the side it won’t take long before you are very uncomfortable. Soon you will start to fidget; you won’t be having any fun and soon you will be joining your buddies down at the house for lunch instead of shooting your buck.
Tip – Oak trees keep their leaves longer than other trees and Whitetail Deer absolutely love the nuts from White Oak. So not only do you get good cover you are hunting a good food source.
Hunting From a Blind
The good things about hunting blinds are:
- You can move around a bid more than you can in a tree stand
- The blind helps hide your scent
- The blind keeps you dry when it rains
- Keeps you warmer on windy days
- You can put a more comfortable chair in a blind to set on
All this ads up to more comfort, a longer day in the woods and more meat on the table.
Tip – During the rut Whitetail Deer are on the move all day and all night. They very rarely rest or eat. The more time you spend in the woods the more chances you will have for a successful hunt.
What to Wear
Being warm can be a huge factor for being able to stay in your stand all day. Some people can take the cold better than others. The fact is some days you are going to get cold.
Some things to think about when the thermometer drops are:
When walking to your stand try not to sweat. Take your coat off if you have to. If you get to your stand and you are sweating let your body cool off before putting your coat on. Once your body is wet with sweat it can cool off much more quickly and can cause hyperthermia.
Find a good pair of boots. For me rubber boots with 1000 grams of Thinsulate and 2 pair of socks works best. The rubber boots help keep the scent down and 1000 grams of Thinsulate keeps my feet warm without making the boots too bulky to walk in. Don’t cramp your feet with too many pairs of socks. This will restrict the circulation in your feet and not do you any good.
Layer your clothing so you can add clothing if you get too cold or take it off if you get too warm.
Find a good pair of gloves. I use the mittens with the fingers inside. The mittens hold the heat from all your fingers in one area. I also use Mittens for ice fishing, they are easy to take off when I get a fish and they keep my hands warmer. It is also easy to put a hand warmer inside the mitten to keep your hands warm.
Other Things to Bring for Camping in the Stand/Blind
When I plan to spend a full day in my tree stand or blind I say I’m going to be “camping out in my stand for the day”.
I will bring a thermos of hot coffee; this also helps on those very cold days.
Food – don’t bring sweets they will only make you more tired. Bring things like apples, trail mix, sandwich, or jerky
Camera – this won’t actually help you get deer it’s just something I like to do. If you’ve spent a day in your stand you know all the cool wildlife you will see. For me a successful hunt isn’t always shooting a deer it can also be just being in the outdoors and having the opportunity to be part of the wildlife around me. Part of a successful hunt for me can also be bringing home some good pictures. Although you can’t eat the pictures it’s still fun and isn’t that what it’s all about.
There are, of course, many ways to learn about Hunting Whitetail Deer. The most lucrative for me has been, talking with other hunters and sporting goods store owners in the area, reading Whitetail Deer Hunting Books then taking this information into the woods and actually putting it to work for me. How can i stop deer from smelling me?
ok yesterday which was 11/15/09 i went deer hunting and had a nice body size Buck that broke his antlers to grow new and he got under my stand walked off and got about 15 yards and smelled me and ran off i called him back and he got about 20 yards and smelled me again how can i get it where he wont smell me so easy i use Sent killer that’s orderless and i leave my clothes in a garbage bag with 3 sent killer dryer sheets that smell like the fresh earth sent what els can i do and use ? i use the spray before i step out the door to walk to the woods and i also use Code blue doe in heat on a rag in my stand and i spray one of the pads that i have hanging on a limb and spray a trail to my ladder i also have another Question about bucks if you could answer that
No amount of scent blocker will block every bit of human scent, especially from 15 or 20yd away. Im guessing you weren’t hunting. Just try to stay down wind (guess that doesn’t help with a tree stand)
are pearson spoiler bows good bows?
Im going to go deer/elk hunting this season and just bought my first bow off of ebay for 42 bucks plus shipping. i figured for that price its worth a shot and if i doesnt workout ill just buy another one and use this on as a back up. he said its kinda old, 13 years. my first bow, dont really know much about them.

it is an older bow that will serve you well. The main thing is, does your draw length match the bows draw length? And is the bow tuned to factory specs?
A good thing for you to do, is take the bow to an archery shop and let them set it up for you, and adjust the draw length if it is needed to match yours, and tell you which arrows would work best in it. The spine weight, length of arrow, etc, bows draw weight, etc, must all be taken into consideration when buying arrows.
